Horticultural Skills Gaps Analysis

The project aims to bring together key players in the sector to identify employer needs, enable employers to access a workforce in deprived communities with the skills they need, and improve communication between employers and training needs providers.
Phase 1: Undertaking research to gain a full understanding of the issues faced by the horticulture industry to enable the sector to focus on the key issues. This will include:

Undertake a review of the current state of the horticultural industry across the county of Norfolk, to identify key sector needs.
Mapping out the needs of the sector against measures of deprivation, as outlined in the OCSI.
Develop a Training Needs Assessment for the industry, based on one to one interviews with employees and employers.
Working with training providers across rural sectors to analyse the skills and training gap within the horticulture sector and how this relates to the wider rural economy.

Phase 2: Dissemination and application of key findings from the research. This will include:
Dissemination of findings to the sector and sub regional, regional and national decision makers.
Develop a training group of horticultural business and learning providers to ensure life long learning and skill development are a focus of the industry.

Work with support agencies and training providers to develop suitable and relevant training to enable individuals to gain access into the horticulture sector and develop career opportunities.

New Profits From Old Buildings

20/07/2007

Traditional farm buildings play a highly significant role in both the rural economy and the cultural heritage of the Norfolk landscape. As farming changes, many buildings fall into disuse and disrepair. At the same time, farmers are being constantly encouraged to diversify their business. The re-use of major economic assets, particularly redundant or under-utilised farm buildings, can therefore play a key part in the diversification process.

However, there are many challenges associated with their re-use –both real and perceived –for which farmers need information, advice and guidance. Through the North Sea Rural Project, these challenges and the opportunities for the commercial re-use of farm buildings have been identified and addressed.

LEADER Norfolk Expressions of Interest

03/12/2007

LEADER is an innovative community driven method of delivering the Rural Development Programme (RDPE), which, at its heart, is the principle that rural communities understand their needs and if they work together they can achieve real and lasting change at the local level. To make this happen the LEADER approach provides support to broadly based groups of local organisations and individuals, to come together to define and then implement a Local Development Strategy.

Improving Your Planning Application

22/02/2007

Most farm diversifications will require planning permission from the local planning authority. The application will be improved by providing further information than that given in the planning application form, to put the development into the context of the farm business as a whole. This will explain the need for the project, and the environmental and social safeguards that would be put in place. NRBAS has prepared a format for a Farm Development Plan that can be submitted with a planning application. The Plan and a guide to its preparation can be downloaded from this site.

Share to Supply

‘Share to Supply ‘is designed to help you find out how to satisfy the increasing demand for fresher, healthier, more environmentally friendly food for public institutions and other large procurers of food in the local area. Nationally, the public sector alone spends approximately £2 billion on food every year and regionally, the private business sector spends around £800 million on food. To make these local markets more accessible for local producers, we needs to build collaborative and competitive supply chains, which are marketed effectively to the consumer to ensure they understand the benefits to them.

NRBAS is working with GoEast, English Farming and Food Partnership to showcase opportunities for producers and end customers of local food in Norfolk.
