PRESS RELEASE

LandSkills East opens its doors to farm and land-based trainees with its first three courses due to commence over the next few months. The aim of this initiative is to boost skills in the agriculture and land-based sector across the six counties of the East of England. Demand-led training is delivered by a diverse and inspiring range of colleges, universities and industry groups and is part funded by the EU and Defra and managed by EEDA.

The first three courses will showcase the breadth of training which is available through the LandSkills East partnership.

Four young farmers from Suffolk will be travelling to Hungary with Otley College to find out first-hand about agriculture and business management in a competitor nation. The trainees will visit farms and agri-businesses involved in food production and marketing of agricultural produce.

Tastes of Anglia offers a workshop to help small businesses compete and meet quality assurance for supplying new outlets. Designed for small to medium sized food and drink businesses (SMEs) looking to supply their products to regional and national food service and retail businesses, the workshop outlines the requirements for the national SALSA accreditation scheme. This recognised quality assurance scheme is a great tool to help small businesses to compete and commence supplying outlets. The day will provide useful information and case studies on the business benefits of accreditation to help the SME decide whether to embark on this route.

A two day training course in Effective Livestock Transportation of cattle and/or sheep will be delivered by Easton College and covers safe and considerate handling of livestock and driving trailers. By increasing awareness of animal welfare and demonstrating practical handling skills and techniques, trainees will be shown how to maintain a calm and relaxed animal. Legislation impacting this area will also be looked at, along with practical vehicle and trailer training to minimise the impact on animal welfare. This training aims to develop transportation techniques that impact positively animal health as well as promoting the productivity benefits of well delivered animal transportation.

The LandSkills East management team is based at the Rural Enterprise Hub, Easton College and also provides a mentor service to trainees who can advise on how to meet future training needs. If you are interested in training please consult the LandSkills East website: www.landskillseast.co.uk or call 01603 748844
